Olympus Launches SecureFlex Single-Use Fine Needle Biopsy Device in U.S.

Olympus announced the U.S. launch of its SecureFlex single-use fine needle biopsy device, which is used in ultrasound-guided tissue sampling to diagnose diseases like pancreatic cancer.

The SecureFlex FNB needle enables collection of large, intact tissue samples and offers easier access to lesions in areas like the pancreatic head and uncinate process. The needle is available in 19G, 22G, and 25G sizes.

Endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine needle biopsy (EBUS-FNB) combines ultrasound and endoscopy to obtain tissue or cell biopsies of lesions that can’t be accessed directly by the endoscope.

SecureFlex’s Dual-Beveled Raptor tip has an outer distal cutting surface that forms a fine edge to support smooth tissue puncture. Its inner proximal cutting surface guides more tissue into the needle. According to Olympus, compared to its predecessor the SecureFlex needle’s tip helps preserve cellular architecture through precise tissue execution.

The needle is constructed of nitinol, which can prevent deformation in tortuous anatomy and maintain straightness after multiple passes. The sheath features a multi-layer design for smooth operation and houndstooth-patterned dimpling enhances ultrasound visibility.
